Geo redirect WordPress plugin: the shortlist
Four plugins on WordPress.org handle geo redirects in different ways. Geo Targetly's Geo Redirect plugin connects your site to a paid vendor account. If-So Geolocation is an add-on to the free If-So plugin. Advanced GeoIP Redirect redirects by country using a free MaxMind database. Geo Controller looks locations up through its own API. On the listings read October 30, 2026, three show 1,000 or more active installs and Advanced GeoIP Redirect shows 900 or more.
What each plugin does and who it fits
- Geo Targetly Geo Redirect: redirects by country, state, city, IP address or radius, with a default redirect for everyone else, page restrictions, query string passing and built-in analytics. The listing says a paid Geo Targetly account is required and mentions a 14 day free trial. It also shows the WordPress.org notice that the plugin is untested with the latest three major WordPress releases and lists a known Elementor editor conflict with a Safe Mode workaround.
- If-So Geolocation: location as a condition in an If-So trigger, with a redirect shortcode. It uses an IP-to-location service or the browser's HTML5 location and requires the free If-So core plugin. If-So's plans page lists 250 geo sessions a month on its free plan.
- Advanced GeoIP Redirect: country-only redirects using the MaxMind GeoIP Lite database, a choice of 301 or 302, a skip rule for bots and crawlers, first-visit-only options and unlimited rules. A Pro version adds cache plugin compatibility, device-based rules and analytics.
- Geo Controller: geolocation and geotargeting with redirects by country or region, response codes 301, 302, 303, 307, 308 and 404, and shortcodes for conditional content. It works without a paid license within 500 lookups a day, and a paid license removes that limit.
Three criteria that decide the choice
- Location source: a vendor service, a free database and an API differ in accuracy and upkeep. Advanced GeoIP Redirect names the MaxMind GeoIP Lite database for its free version and GeoIP2 for Pro, and MaxMind says its free GeoLite City is considerably less accurate than paid GeoIP City data. MaxMind estimates 99.8 percent country accuracy for its paid GeoIP products.
- Page caching: a cached page can serve one version to everyone, so a location rule may never run. If-So's guide adds an attribute that fires the redirect after the cached page loads, Advanced GeoIP Redirect lists cache compatibility in its Pro version, and the Geo Controller listing warns that full-page caching can affect location-specific content and says to test every rule.
- Redirect status: use 302 or 307 while you test. Google's documentation says permanent redirects show the new target in results and temporary ones show the source page, and If-So's guide calls 302 the safer default for geo redirects.
SEO and crawlers: what to check first
Google recommends separate URLs for each country or language version, annotated with hreflang, and says not to use IP analysis to adapt content because it is generally not reliable and Google may not crawl every variation. It says to avoid automatically redirecting by perceived language and to add links so visitors can pick a version. A plugin that skips crawlers should be a deliberate choice, since Google also says to treat its crawler like any user from the country it appears to come from. The redirect guide gives the order of steps.
When no plugin is the better option
- Cloudflare redirect rules: Single Redirects are available on every Cloudflare plan, the Free plan allows 10 rules, and a rule can test the visitor's country. Cloudflare's own subdomain example sets a 301, so check the status before saving.
- A visible country selector on every page: no location lookup and no cache trouble, and it matches Google's advice to let visitors choose.
- Hosted tools off WordPress: Geo Targetly vs If-So compares the two most-named services, and Geo Targetly pricing shows how its quota works.
